Stockport has no public New Year's Eve event or fireworks. The nearest free display is Manchester's at midnight, and the 192 night bus runs on Thursday nights.

Stockport does not hold a public New Year’s Eve celebration. There is no council fireworks display, no countdown in Market Place and nothing in Mersey Square. We checked the council’s events calendar for 31 December 2026 and the archived copy of last winter’s listings, and neither carries a town event.

The nearest free public display is Manchester’s, eight minutes of fireworks fired from the roof of Central Library at midnight. This page covers that, the one Stockport show that runs on the day, and how to get home.

The quick answer

What is on in Stockport on 31 December

The only public event on the council’s listings for New Year’s Eve is the pantomime. Jack and the Beanstalk at the Plaza has a matinee at 2.30pm on Thursday 31 December, finishing at 5pm, with Todd Carty as Fleshcreep. Tickets are £26.95, £24.75 concessions, £21.45 children and £90.20 for a family, with a 10% booking fee online that you avoid by buying in person at the Plaza (Stockport Council events). Pubs, bars and restaurants run their own ticketed nights, and those are the places to look if you want to stay in town.

Manchester’s fireworks: how it worked last year

Manchester City Council announced its 2025 event on 19 December 2025, under two weeks before the night (Manchester City Council). It ran two free events:

  • St Peter’s Square: a DJ-led, family event from 10pm, hosted by BBC Radio Manchester’s Joe McGrath, then a firework and light display “off the roof of Manchester’s iconic Central Library building” on the stroke of midnight. It was alcohol-free, with food and hot drinks on sale.
  • Albert Square: the Christmas market square with the giant Ferris wheel, food and drink stalls, open all day and into the night until 12.30am.

The rules that catch people out:

  • Both squares had a capacity and closed when full. There was no walk-through between them, and getting into one did not guarantee the other.
  • Bags no bigger than A4, no glass, and bag searches at every entrance.
  • Guide dogs only on St Peter’s Square.
  • An accessible viewing area on the Metrolink platform nearest Central Library, first come first served, entered from Dickinson Street.

On the night more than 20,000 people went, and the display was eight minutes long (Manchester City Council, 1 January 2026).

Getting there and back from Stockport

By bus. The 192 has run 24 hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights since 3 September 2026, giving a late-night link between Stockport and Manchester (Stockport Council). New Year’s Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday. Last year, before the night service existed, the 192 already ran extra late-night journeys on New Year’s Eve, and most Bee Network routes ran a Saturday timetable while other operators stopped from 6pm (TfGM, archived 31 December 2025).

By train. Do not plan on a train home after midnight. Last New Year’s Eve most Greater Manchester trains stopped or ran an amended timetable from 7pm, and Northern warned that last trains would be earlier than usual (same TfGM page; Northern, archived).

By tram. St Peter’s Square tram stop closed at 9pm for the fireworks. Trams then ran every 12 minutes on shortened routes, including East Didsbury to Deansgate-Castlefield, and the last trams left the city centre at around 1am (same TfGM page).
