No festive rail works are booked through Stockport yet. Last year trains stopped from about 7pm on Christmas Eve, and none ran on 25 or 26 December.

Nobody has published Stockport’s Christmas 2026 train or bus times yet. On 25 September we read every notice on National Rail’s list of planned engineering works: the latest one starts on 19 December, and nothing is booked on any line through Stockport between Christmas Eve and 2 January. That list fills up in the autumn, so this is a snapshot, not a promise.

What we can tell you is what happened last Christmas, from the operators’ own festive pages, and which late-night closures are already booked for the run-up.

The quick answer

  • Last year there were no trains at all on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, and on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve most Greater Manchester trains stopped or ran an amended timetable from about 7pm.
  • London trains were disrupted from 27 December to 4 January 2026, with the West Coast main line closed between Milton Keynes and Rugby.
  • 2026 details are not out. This year Christmas Day is a Friday, Boxing Day a Saturday and New Year’s Day a Friday.

These are 2025/26 arrangements. They are here because the shape repeats most years, not because this year’s will match.

Northern’s own summary last year was blunt: “Don’t forget, there are no trains on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.” It also told passengers to check again on the day of travel for last trains back.

Trains to London

Avanti West Coast’s festive calendar last year showed a normal but busy service up to 23 December, an early shutdown on Christmas Eve, no trains on 25 and 26 December, and engineering work from 27 December to 4 January. Between 27 and 31 December “the railway is closed for upgrade work between Milton Keynes and Rugby”, with trains between London Euston and Milton Keynes, replacement buses from Milton Keynes to Northampton, and Avanti trains on from Northampton to Manchester. Normal service came back on 15 January (Avanti West Coast, archived 8 December 2025).

Already booked before Christmas

Three sets of late-night works on Stockport’s lines are on National Rail’s list for November. Each affects only the last trains of the evening.

  • Monday 23 to Friday 27 November: buses replace late trains between Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Airport, Stockport, Alderley Edge, Wilmslow and Crewe. The 23:01 Manchester Piccadilly to Alderley Edge terminates at Stockport, with a bus on (National Rail).
  • Monday 23 to Thursday 26 November: late trains between Stockport, Hazel Grove and Buxton are replaced by buses. The 23:10 Manchester Piccadilly to Buxton does not run, and the 23:23 to Hazel Grove terminates at Stockport (National Rail).
  • Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 November: amended late trains between Manchester Piccadilly, Rose Hill Marple and Sheffield. The 20:21 Manchester Piccadilly to Rose Hill Marple leaves at 20:38 (National Rail).

Buses over Christmas

TfGM’s page for last year survives only from its final day, so it covers New Year and not Christmas itself:

  • New Year’s Eve: Bee Network routes ran a Saturday timetable, and the 192 ran late-night journeys between Stockport and Manchester. Other operators generally stopped from 6pm.
  • New Year’s Day: only listed routes ran, on special timetables. The 192 was one of them; most other buses did not run.
  • Friday 2 January: normal service on Bee Network routes.

Since 3 September 2026 the 192 has run 24 hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (Stockport Council). New Year’s Eve 2026 is a Thursday, which should help, but TfGM has not said how the night service will run over the holidays.

Parking and roads

Still to be confirmed

  • Network Rail’s Christmas works for 2026. National Rail’s list does not reach Christmas yet. We will check it from late October.
  • Northern’s and Avanti’s festive timetables, usually online by early December.
  • TfGM’s Christmas bus times, including whether the 192 night service runs on Christmas Eve.
  • Whether trains run on Saturday 26 December, Boxing Day. Last year it was a Friday and nothing ran.
