Stockport Today is an independent news and information site for Stockport and its borough. We are not part of the council, we do not take briefings in place of documents, and we link every fact we publish to the record it came from.
The borough we cover
Stockport town centre and the neighbourhoods around it, Edgeley, Offerton, Heaton Norris, Reddish and Brinnington, then the Heatons, Cheadle, Gatley, Cheadle Hulme and Bramhall to the west and south, Hazel Grove towards the Peak, and Marple, Marple Bridge, Romiley, Bredbury and Woodley out along the Goyt. They sit under one town hall and share the SK postcodes, and beyond that they have fairly little in common, which is exactly why one site covering all of them is worth having.
What we do
We read the paperwork. Stockport Council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime figures, sold prices from HM Land Registry, Food Standards Agency inspection results, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Mersey, the Tame and the Goyt, and The Gazette. Some of what happens here is decided at Greater Manchester level rather than in Stockport, and we say which is which. Then we write it in plain English, with the source linked on every fact, and we keep the reference pages right, because a wrong bin date costs somebody a fortnight.
Where we will not go
We do not invent detail to fill a gap in a record. If a planning file is ambiguous, or a figure has been revised, we say so on the page. We do not republish other outlets’ photographs, and where we use an image we either took it, licensed it, were given it for that purpose, or it is openly licensed and credited.
