Stockport Roadworks This Week: School Lane and M60 Closures

The biggest change this week is at the A6 in Heaton Chapel. School Lane stays closed in both directions at the A6 until Friday 13 November, a week longer than the council first said (Stockport Council). From today, Heaton Moor Road is one-way eastbound at the A6 until Sunday 8 November.

On the motorway, the M60 anticlockwise shuts between junctions 1 and 25 on Saturday and Sunday nights, from midnight to 6am. No TransPennine Express trains run via Stockport between Sheffield and Manchester this weekend.

This page is rechecked against each source before it is updated. Every section was confirmed on Friday 6 November unless we say otherwise.

Updated 6 November: School Lane’s closure now runs to 13 November. Removed the finished M60 clockwise nights, the Edgeley closure and the tram works, which ended on 1 November. Added this weekend’s M60 and rail closures, the new resurfacing dates and a Kingsway night closure on 17 and 18 November.

What is running, and until when

The A6 at Heaton Chapel: School Lane shut to 13 November

The council’s A6 scheme at School Lane and Heaton Moor Road started on 19 October and runs for about six months (Stockport Council). It includes:

• a new crossing for people walking and cycling on the A6 between Cambridge Road and Abney Road
• raised tables across side roads where they meet the A6
• better crossings and landscaping at the School Lane and Heaton Moor Road junction
• a new right-turn lane from the A6 into Heaton Moor Road

The work in October and November concentrates on the crossing and the raised tables, then pauses until the new year. Abney Road, Cambridge Road, Heathfield Avenue and Holly Road are booked as closed on the road works register until 31 March 2027 (Greater Manchester road works).

Electricity North West is diverting cables first. The council’s page, updated on 5 November, gives these closures:

Work runs 8am to 4pm, with no evening or night work, but the traffic management stays in place around the clock. The council has asked the contractor to stop for the two-minute silence on Remembrance Sunday, 8 November.

The road works register books both roads for longer than the council’s page. It shows School Lane closed to 26 November and Heaton Moor Road closed from 7 to 26 November (Greater Manchester road works). Check the signs.

Buses: the A6 stops between School Lane and Manchester Road are closed in both directions. On the Bee Network alerts, buses avoiding School Lane divert via Heaton Moor Road, the A6, Belmont Way and Manchester Road until 13 November. While Heaton Moor Road is one-way, from 6 to 8 November, TfGM lists a further diversion via Parsonage Road and Heaton Road. It also warns of delays on Wellington Road North until 13 November (Bee Network).

Further north on the A6: trial holes to about 13 November

For the next A6 scheme, between School Lane and Bowerfold Lane, the council started about two weeks of site investigations on Monday 2 November (Stockport Council):

• On the A6: a temporary lane closure from 10am to 4pm and from 7pm to 11pm.
• On side roads: lane closures from 7am to 5pm, with access to the A6 kept open.

The motorways around Stockport

National Highways’ seven-day closure report starts on Thursday 5 November and covers the nights to Wednesday 11 November (National Highways). It prints no diversion routes. Junction 1 is the Pyramid roundabout in the town centre, junction 3 the A34 Kingsway at Cheadle, junction 25 Bredbury and junction 27 Portwood.

The M67 at Hyde and Denton

The Hyde to Glossop scheme closes the M67 westbound between junctions 4 and 3, with the junction 3 exit slip, from 8pm to 6am on Friday 6 November and on Monday 9 to Wednesday 11 November. The M67 eastbound from the Denton end to junction 2 closes from 9pm on Sunday 8 November, with the junction 1 exit slip.

The A6 at Railway Road, by Stockport station

Cadent Gas began three weeks of gas main diversions at the A6 and Railway Road junction on Monday 19 October, ahead of the council’s junction upgrade (Stockport Council). Temporary traffic lights at the junction stay in place day and night to protect deep excavations. The council says they may stay for a shorter or longer time depending on how Cadent’s work goes. The road works register books Cadent’s lights at the junction until 18 November (Greater Manchester road works).

Portwood: Great Portwood Street and Carrington Road

Great Portwood Street is booked as closed until 27 November. Buses towards Stockport divert via Tiviot Way and Lancashire Hill until then (Bee Network).

Carrington Road has reopened both ways under temporary signals. The council says buses stay on their diversion via New Bridge Lane around the clock because of other town centre works due to finish at the end of November (Stockport Council). TfGM lists the Carrington Road stops as closed until 24 November; use the stops on New Bridge Lane or Stockport Road West.

Marple and Marple Bridge

Stockport Road, Marple: since 19 October, the council has been building a new toucan crossing near Memorial Park Drive, a job of around seven weeks. Parking bays on the north side between Queen Street and Townley Terrace are suspended throughout. Stockport Road between Trinity Street and Canal Street will then be resurfaced under an evening road closure, finishing by midnight each night. The council’s page, last updated on 21 October, still gives no dates for that (Stockport Council).

Glossop Road, Marple Bridge: two-way temporary lights at Benches Lane since Monday 2 November, for about three weeks, 8am to 5pm on weekdays. The council is building a new footway and crossing and upgrading both bus stops for the Woodheys development (Stockport Council).

Council resurfacing: what is next

Every carriageway job below needs a road closure during working hours, and every date is “weather permitting”. The council’s list was updated on 30 October (Stockport Council).

Dysart Street, Dundonald Road, Bideford Road and Outwood Road are all booked to finish today, 6 November. Belmont Way, Heaton Norris, which the council’s earlier list put in late November, is no longer on it.

Other council schemes

• Manchester Road, Cheadle: evening footway works between the railway bridge and Newland Road started on 12 October for about four weeks, 6pm to 2am on weekdays, with the road open both ways (Stockport Council). The background is in our Cheadle station story.
• A34, A555 to Stanley Green: the footway and cycleway job started on 17 August for about 12 weeks. Street lighting work follows under an off-peak nearside lane closure for about two weeks; the council’s page, last updated on 9 October, gives no dates (Stockport Council).
• Castle Hill, Bredbury: the council lists a closure of Castle Hill, with temporary lights on Ashton Road when needed, 8am to 4pm on weekdays. It still gives no dates (Stockport Council).
• Ladybrook Valley, Bramhall: the page still carries its August update, so it does not say whether the riverside path between Ramillies Avenue and Bramhall Park Road has reopened (Stockport Council).

Trains

Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November

No trains run between Sheffield and Manchester Oxford Road via Stockport. TransPennine Express trains are diverted via Huddersfield. Northern’s Sheffield trains run only between Grindleford and Piccadilly, with a bus between Sheffield and Bamford (National Rail).

On Sunday 8 November no trains run on the direct line between Stafford and Crewe. Avanti runs two trains an hour between Euston and Piccadilly, diverted via Stoke-on-Trent, and Stafford gets no Avanti trains. Tickets are accepted on Avanti between Stoke-on-Trent, Macclesfield, Stockport and Piccadilly (National Rail).

Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 November: the Marple and Hope Valley line

Work between Chinley and Dore closes the line late on both evenings (National Rail):

• the 20:21 Piccadilly to Rose Hill Marple leaves at 20:38 and runs later throughout
• the 21:48 Piccadilly to Sheffield terminates at New Mills Central, with a bus on to Sheffield
• the 23:28 Sheffield to Piccadilly does not run; a bus replaces it throughout

Looking further ahead: 23 to 27 November
