Driving around Stockport this month means threading between a run of council schemes: temporary lights on the A6 corridor and at Hazel Grove, two long-running junction jobs finishing off, overnight resurfacing closures at the end of August, and the multi-year A34 corridor rebuild moving into its next phase. Town centre, Sunday 9 August: Krazy Races

For the soapbox derby event, a ring of central streets closes 4pm to 9pm on Sunday 9 August: Mersey Square, Chestergate (Mersey Square to Great Underbank), Rock Row, Piccadilly, St Peters Square, St Petersgate (Lawrence Street to Piccadilly), Duke Street, Great Underbank, Bridge Street at Warren Street, and Lower Hillgate from Little Underbank to Wellington Street (Stockport Council). Roads reopen as soon as it is safe afterwards. If you are heading into town that evening, the train or bus wins; see things to do in Stockport if you are making a day of it.

A6 corridor, Heaton Moor: Buckingham Road works

The council and Transport for Greater Manchester are rebuilding crossings along Buckingham Road as part of the “A6 Corridor: Improving Journeys” scheme: a raised junction table at Peel Moat Road, crossing improvements at Brownsville Road and a continuous footway outside Heaton School. The phase that matters now: Brownsville Road closes at its Buckingham Road junction from the week starting 10 August for about two weeks, with two-way temporary lights and a signed diversion. Then comes the noisiest bit: Buckingham Road closes completely at the Peel Moat Road junction overnight, 7pm to 5am, from 24 to 27 August for resurfacing (Stockport Council).

Jacksons Lane, Hazel Grove: five weeks of temporary lights

From the week beginning 3 August, for around five weeks, Jacksons Lane has temporary traffic lights while the footway is upgraded to a shared walking and cycling path serving the Laurus Grace school. Working hours are generally 7:30am to 5pm on weekdays, access to properties is maintained, and the council has flagged further associated works later this year (Stockport Council). The A6 through Hazel Grove is slow at school-run times at the best of times; add a margin while the lights are in.

The May hangovers: Great Portwood Street and Bredbury

Two three-to-four-month jobs that started in late May are still running. Great Portwood Street is getting a new Puffin crossing, repaved footways and resurfacing, with traffic management through to roughly late August and Richard Street running one-way northbound (Stockport Council). At Bredbury, the Stockport Road East, George Lane and Redhouse Lane junction is being rebuilt with Toucan crossings and a new shared-use path, running to around late September, with evening resurfacing closures of the junction approaches to come near the end, dates still to be confirmed (Stockport Council).

The big one: the A34 corridor, 2024 to 2028

The longest-running scheme in the borough is the A34 Corridor Improvement Plan between the M60 and the A555: a segregated walking and cycling route, safer crossings and junction changes, built in phases from 2024 with construction running to 2028. The next phase starts from mid-August 2026, when main works begin on the new segregated path alongside the A34 northbound between the A555 and Stanley Green, coordinated with the McDonald’s development now on site there. The Cheadle Royal roundabout improvements are in detailed design, with daytime lane closures already used for site investigations (Stockport Council). If the A34 is your daily run to Cheadle, Handforth or the airport area, expect intermittent narrow lanes and closures on this stretch for years rather than weeks; the council’s scheme line is 0161 474 2299.

The M60: quiet now, Simister Island next

There is currently no National Highways maintenance scheme on Stockport’s stretch of the M60: the agency’s North West schemes list, checked this week, shows nothing between the borough’s junctions (National Highways). The M60 story that will matter is at Junction 18, Simister Island, where the M60, M62 and M66 meet north of the city: a £255 to £296 million upgrade of a junction carrying around 90,000 vehicles a day, adding a free-flow link and widening the M66 approach. Construction starts in summer 2026 with completion expected 2029-30, and overnight closures are already being used to install traffic management (National Highways). Anyone using the M60 clockwise towards the M62 should expect years of overnight restrictions on that side of the orbital.

Getting to the station and the Interchange

The evergreen facts for anyone connecting to a train or bus:

  • Stockport station (Grand Central Way, SK3 9HZ) has around 1,000 parking spaces including 13 accessible bays, with the main car park at Stockport Exchange on Railway Road run by NCP, plus six EV charging points and cycle storage (National Rail).   • Stockport Interchange, the bus station under the two-acre rooftop park, opened in March 2024 with 18 stands and capacity for 164 departures an hour, a covered concourse, cycle storage and a walking and cycling ramp linking to Station Road, so rail-to-bus changes are a short flat walk (Transport for Greater Manchester).

The A555 flooding fix, quietly progressing

The airport relief road’s known weakness is flooding, and the first of the council’s fixes is now substantially complete: the Woodford Recreation Ground drainage works divert water from north of the A555 straight to Spath Brook rather than through the Hall Moss Lane pump station, with new detention basins, and the last closed path reopened on 22 July (Stockport Council). Next comes extra pump capacity at Hall Moss Lane later this year, then pond improvements at the Oil Terminal gyratory (Place North West, 5 August 2026). Worth knowing before the autumn storms: the A555 has closed in heavy rain before, and the fix is arriving in stages.

What it means for you

  • School-run and commute via the A6 or Hazel Grove: allow extra time through August; Jacksons Lane’s lights run about five weeks and Brownsville Road is shut from 10 August.
  • Late August nights: avoid Buckingham Road at Peel Moat Road, 7pm to 5am, 24 to 27 August.
  • A34 regulars: the corridor is a construction zone in phases to 2028; the next stretch to slow down is A555 to Stanley Green from mid-August.
  • Town centre on Sunday 9 August: central streets shut from 4pm; go in by train or bus.
  • M60 users: nothing on Stockport’s stretch right now, but Simister Island’s four-year rebuild begins this summer at the northern side of the orbital.
