Stockport Roadworks: M60 Cheadle Slips Shut Four Nights

Both M60 exit slips at junction 3, the Cheadle junction, close tonight. They shut again on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. The Pyramid roundabout at junction 1 loses its anticlockwise slips tonight as well, from 11pm.

The bigger change next week is on the railway. Network Rail is working in the Stockport area from Monday to Thursday evening, and Northern is cutting or bussing several late-night services, including the last train to Hazel Grove.

This page is rechecked against each source before it is updated. Everything below was confirmed today, Friday 18 September, unless we say otherwise.

What is running, and until when

The M60 through Stockport

Cheadle: junction 3 exit slips, four more nights

The drainage scheme on the M60 between junctions 2 and 4 is still running. National Highways’ seven-day closure report, which covers 17 to 23 September and was last updated at 3.31pm on Thursday, lists both junction 3 exit slips, clockwise and anticlockwise, as closed from 9pm to 6am on:

• tonight, Friday 18 September
• Monday 21 September
• Tuesday 22 September
• Wednesday 23 September

There is no closure listed for Saturday or Sunday night. Junction 3 is the A34 Kingsway junction at Cheadle. The motorway itself stays open, so if you normally leave there for Cheadle, Gatley or East Didsbury you will be carried on to the next junction. The report prints no diversion, so follow the signs on the night (National Highways).

Heaton Norris: the Pyramid roundabout slips, two nights

The separate barrier scheme between junctions 25 and 2 closes the anticlockwise entry and exit slips at junction 1 from 11pm to 6am on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 September. Junction 1 is the Pyramid roundabout on Didsbury Road, as the council’s own works notice for it confirms (Stockport Council). Nothing is listed there for next week.

Denton and Northenden

• Junction 24 clockwise exit slip, at Denton, about five miles north east of Stockport town centre: closed 9pm to 6am on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 September, for the barrier scheme between junctions 24 and 25.
• Junction 5 at Northenden, in Manchester: the clockwise exit slip closes 9pm to 6am on Monday 21 September, and the clockwise entry slip 11pm to 6am on Wednesday 23 September, for electrical work between junctions 8 and 24.
• Junction 8 clockwise exit slip, at Sale, is closed every weeknight this week, from 9pm or 11pm to 6am.

The western side of the ring

If you are heading round to Eccles, the anticlockwise carriageway between junctions 11 and 10 is closed from 9pm to 7am on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 September, along with the junction 10 exit slip and both junction 11 entry slips. The two link roads from the M62 eastbound onto the M60 close at the same times (National Highways).

Council roadworks

Carrington Road: one-way eastbound until about 5 October

Carrington Road is one-way eastbound, towards Bredbury, 24 hours a day. That started on Monday 7 September and the council put this phase at around 4 weeks, which points at the first week of October. Westbound drivers are diverted by signs from the Stockport Road West, New Zealand Road and New Bridge Lane junction.

The road then reopens both ways under temporary signals for the rest of a scheme lasting around 7 weeks. The work covers:

• an upgrade of the signal-controlled crossing on Carrington Road
• a new raised table on Werneth Street at its junction with Carrington Road
• bus stop improvements, including moving the eastbound stop
• footway improvements

For 330 bus passengers:

• the westbound stop outside Carrington Cars, towards Stockport, is closed for the whole scheme
• a temporary westbound stop outside 10 Carrington Road opens once the road reopens westbound
• the eastbound stop outside 31 and 33 Carrington Road closes for the later phases, with a temporary stop outside 11 Carrington Road

Working hours are generally 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. Evening resurfacing closures come near the end, and the council says it will publicise them nearer the time (Stockport Council).

Resurfacing: what is closed now

Ten streets are in the council’s current run. Each needs a road closure with a signed local diversion during working hours, and every date is “weather permitting”.

The jobs from Kays Avenue to Burnage Lane are micro-surfacing, a thinner surface treatment, and the working day is 7.30am to 5pm unless shown. On the Glendene entry the council’s heading says Glendene Avenue and its text says Glendene Road (Stockport Council).

Resurfacing: the October and November list

The same page now carries seven more schemes with month-level dates only. Nothing has been fixed to a day yet, so treat these as a warning rather than a diary entry:

Outwood Road is the long one at about 15 days, and Belmont Way is the only entry where the council’s heading and its text disagree on the street name: the heading says Belmont Way, the text says Belmont Street (Stockport Council).

The A34: narrow lanes to the A555 until about 9 November

Work started on Monday 17 August on a segregated footway and cycleway beside the northbound A34, between the A555 junction and Stanley Green roundabout. The council expects around 12 weeks, which points at about 9 November. It is being done under narrowed lanes, so the road stays open. The page lists no overnight closure since the one on 29 August, and it has not been updated since 26 August (Stockport Council). Questions go to 0161 474 2299 or a34improvements@stockport.gov.uk.

Schemes past their own dates, with no update

Four council pages give finish dates that have now passed, and none has been changed since we last checked on 11 September. We cannot confirm the work is done, so we are not going to say that it is:

• Brownsville Road, Heaton Moor: the crossing work at the Buckingham Road junction was due to finish by 1 September. The page still describes Brownsville Road as closed at that junction, with two-way lights on Buckingham Road. Last updated 24 August (Stockport Council).
• Jacksons Lane, Hazel Grove: the temporary lights went up in the week of 3 August for a job put at about five weeks, which ran out in the first week of September. Last updated 29 July, and the council says further works are planned later this year (Stockport Council).
• Great Portwood Street: the Puffin crossing job near Marsland Street began in the week of 25 May and was put at about three months, so it was due to end in late August. Last updated 24 July (Stockport Council).
• Ladybrook Valley, Bramhall: the council expected to open the Ladybridge Road to Blenheim Road link in “late August/early September”, once delayed bridleway gates arrived. Its page still carries the August update (Stockport Council).

The Ladybrook path between Ramillies Avenue and Bramhall Park Road has been closed since the week of 17 August, for about two months of earthworks, which points at about mid-October. It is also shut from Ramillies Avenue to Ladybridge Road while the site compound is there.

The Stockport Road East, George Lane and Redhouse Lane junction in Bredbury was billed at about four months from the week of 25 May, so its own date runs out in the next fortnight. Expect traffic management there until then (Stockport Council).

Trains

Monday to Thursday: late-night services cut in the Stockport area

This is the change most likely to catch someone out. Network Rail is closing lines in the Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport area on the evenings of Monday 21 to Thursday 24 September, and Northern has amended its last trains. On the Buxton and Hazel Grove line:

• the 23:23 Piccadilly to Hazel Grove will not run at all and is replaced by a bus
• the 22:57 Buxton to Piccadilly will not call at Heaton Chapel or Levenshulme, with a replacement bus from Stockport to Piccadilly serving those two stations

On the Crewe, Macclesfield and Airport lines through Stockport, over the same four evenings:

• the 23:16 Piccadilly to Macclesfield is bus replaced throughout
• the 22:46 Piccadilly to Stoke-on-Trent is bus replaced throughout
• the 23:37 Piccadilly to Manchester Airport will not run
• the 23:11 Crewe to Piccadilly will not call at stations between Wilmslow and Piccadilly, with a bus from Wilmslow
• the 23:36 Piccadilly to Crewe departs a minute later, runs via Heald Green and will not call between Piccadilly and Wilmslow, with a bus provided
• the 22:23 Blackpool North to Manchester Airport calls additionally at Heald Green

Sunday 20 September: no Avanti into Euston before 4pm

The West Coast Main Line is shut between London Euston and Watford Junction until 4pm on Sunday 20 September, for an urgent bridge removal by Network Rail. Avanti West Coast is advising people to avoid travelling to or from Euston that day. One train an hour will run between Milton Keynes Central and Manchester Piccadilly, and rail replacement buses will run between Milton Keynes Central and Bedford, from where Thameslink and East Midlands Railway trains reach London St Pancras.

If you already hold a ticket for the 20th, Avanti says you can use it on any day from Friday 18 to Tuesday 22 September at no extra cost, on both halves of a return, or claim a full refund. Trains after 4pm are expected to be extremely busy (National Rail, Avanti West Coast).

Further ahead

• Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September: buses replace trains between New Mills Newtown and Buxton, for work between Furness Vale and Buxton (National Rail).
• Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 October: late-evening changes on the Rose Hill Marple and Sheffield route. The 20:21 Piccadilly to Rose Hill Marple leaves 17 minutes later, at 20:38, and runs late throughout (National Rail).

Trams

TfGM changed the Metrolink timetable on Monday 14 September. Trams still run every 15 minutes across the network, with extra trams added at peak times, and TfGM says the change stays “until further notice” (TfGM).

The improvement works diary for the next six weeks (TfGM):

• Sunday 20 September: no trams through Victoria until 10am. A replacement bus runs between Victoria and Piccadilly until 11am.
• Monday 21 to Saturday 26 September: no trams via Market Street or Shudehill. Manchester Airport services run to Victoria via Exchange Square. Altrincham to Bury services also run via Exchange Square, not calling at Piccadilly Gardens, Piccadilly, Market Street or Shudehill.
• Sunday 27 September to Friday 2 October: no trams between St Peter’s Square or Market Street and Piccadilly. Ashton-under-Lyne and Etihad Campus services start from Piccadilly, Eccles services terminate at Deansgate-Castlefield, and Altrincham to Bury services run via Market Street.
• Monday 19 October to Sunday 1 November: the big one. No trams at all on the Eccles, Trafford Centre and Altrincham lines. East Didsbury and Manchester Airport services terminate at Firswood, and Rochdale line services terminate at Exchange Square. Normal service resumes on Monday 2 November.

Any tram ticket valid for the zones of your journey is also valid on a replacement bus, and 1-day Bee Bus tickets are accepted too, but you cannot buy a ticket from a replacement bus driver.

TfGM’s alerts list one escalator and several lifts out of service, none of them on the East Didsbury line. The exit escalator at Manchester Airport is out, and there is no step-free access at Failsworth, where TfGM directs passengers to Hollinwood instead (TfGM travel alerts).

What it means for you

• Cheadle drivers: both junction 3 exit slips shut from 9pm tonight and again on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The weekend is clear.
• Last train home on Monday to Thursday: the 23:23 from Piccadilly to Hazel Grove is a bus, and the 23:16 to Macclesfield is a bus throughout.
• Heaton Chapel and Levenshulme: the 22:57 from Buxton will not stop. Change at Stockport for the replacement bus.
• Carrington Road: eastbound only, towards Bredbury, until about 5 October. Coming the other way, follow the signs from Stockport Road West.
• London on Sunday 20 September: no Avanti into Euston before 4pm, and your ticket is valid any day from today to Tuesday instead.
• Bramhall, Bredbury and Heaton Mersey: Dairyground Road closes from tomorrow, Lower Bents Lane on Sunday and again on Sunday the 27th, and Burnage Lane from Monday.
• Put 19 October in the diary now: Airport and East Didsbury trams will stop at Firswood for a fortnight.
