Lyme's house opens as The World at Christmas from 27 November to 24 December 2026, 11am to 3pm last entry. Afternoon tea is £30; entry £19 adult.

Lyme’s Christmas for 2026 is already published, which makes it the most complete festive day out near Stockport so far. The National Trust house at Disley, just over the borough boundary, reopens its rooms as The World at Christmas from Friday 27 November to Thursday 24 December, each one decorated around how a different part of the world celebrates.

There is no Father Christmas and no light trail. It is a decorated house, free choir performances in the courtyard at weekends, a festive afternoon tea and two Christmas concerts, set in 1,400 acres of park you can walk all winter.

The quick answer

  • The World at Christmas: 27 November to 24 December 2026, house open 11am, last entry 3pm, included in normal admission.
  • Admission: £19 adult, £9.50 child, £47.50 family for the house, park and garden; National Trust members free. Tickets are bought on arrival and cannot be pre-booked.
  • Closed on Christmas Day. From 26 to 31 December the house is shut but the park and garden stay open.

The World at Christmas is made by Handmade Theatre with local schools, community groups and volunteers, from sustainable materials. Sensory items and ear defenders can be borrowed from the Entrance Hall (National Trust, Christmas at Lyme; event listing).

The afternoon tea has a glass of non-alcoholic bubbly, winter soup, sandwiches, scones and festive sweets, with unlimited tea and coffee. You book by table, not by person, pay a deposit online and settle the rest on the day (National Trust event).

The concerts are part of Lyme’s chapel series. The candlelight concert gives after-hours access to the chapel (candlelight concerts; Concerts in the Chapel).

Under-5s are free. With Gift Aid the adult prices are £20.90 and £9.90. The park and garden ticket covers the estate walks, formal garden, cafés, shops and the car park. Carers and companions come in free (National Trust admission prices for Lyme).

Getting there from Stockport without a car

  • Bus: the 199 Skyline runs twice an hour from Stockport, Stepping Hill and Hazel Grove towards Buxton, and the National Trust quotes £3 each way. Get off at Burton Road West, a five-minute walk from the entrance.
  • Train: Disley station is about 20 minutes’ walk from the entrance, with a waymarked route.
  • Either way, the house is a further mile, about 30 minutes, from the gate. A free volunteer shuttle runs most days from 10.30am to 4pm from the admissions hut; call 01663 762023 to check it is running.
  • Arriving car-free gets you free entry to the park and garden and 10% off in the cafés when you show a bus ticket dated that day.
