Cameras going up this week will fine drivers for a banned turn in Cheadle and a yellow box in Hazel Grove. First offences get a warning for six months.
Stockport Council is putting up its first cameras to fine drivers for moving traffic offences. Two sites are being fitted this week:
- the banned right turn from Massie Street on to High Street, Cheadle
- the yellow box junction on the A6 at New Moor Lane, Hazel Grove
Two more follow “at a later date”: the right turn from Georges Road on to the A6 at Heaton Norris, and Bramhall Lane at the A6 near the Blossoms pub. The council announced the rollout on Wednesday (Stockport Council).
Nobody is fined straight away
The cameras will not go live as soon as they are up. The council says each site has to be prepared, and the cameras installed and tested, before enforcement starts. It has not yet given a switch-on date for either site.
Once enforcement starts, there is a six-month introductory period. A driver’s first offence in that time brings a warning notice, not a penalty. A second one during the same period can bring a fine (Stockport Council).
Councils outside London can issue a Penalty Charge Notice of up to £70 for a moving traffic contravention caught on camera (Traffic Penalty Tribunal). The council has not published its own charge for these sites yet. Notices go by post to the registered keeper, and any challenge has to be made in writing within the time given on the notice, as the council set out when it consulted (Stockport Council consultation).
Why these junctions
These are not new rules. Every site already has the restriction in place; what changes is that the council can now enforce it itself with number plate recognition cameras. Until these powers arrived, only the police could.
The council’s own list of planned sites has one more than the news release (Stockport Council):

When the council consulted in February and March 2023, its first list also included the 7.5 tonne weight limit on the Demmings Road bridge in Cheadle, and a banned left turn from the A6 into Bramhall Lane. The current list does not include the Demmings Road bridge, and names only the right turn at Bramhall Lane (Stockport Council consultation).
The council says the cameras are meant to make roads safer, cut congestion and speed up journeys. Unlike speed camera fines, which go to central government, any money raised is kept by the council. It has to be spent on the cost of enforcement, public transport, highway improvements or environmental improvements in the borough, the consultation document says.
What it means for you
- If you use Massie Street in Cheadle: the right turn on to High Street is already banned. Soon a camera will catch it.
- On the A6 at Hazel Grove: do not enter the yellow box at New Moor Lane unless your exit is clear.
- Your first slip in the first six months brings a warning letter, not a fine. The second can cost up to £70.
- Heaton Norris and the Blossoms junction are next, with no date yet.
