Remembrance Sunday 2026 is 8 November. Stockport's civic service is at the War Memorial Art Gallery at 11am; Armistice Day falls on Wednesday 11 November.

Remembrance Sunday 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, and Stockport’s main service is the Civic Act of Remembrance at 11am on the steps of the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery, Wellington Road South, SK3 8AB. The council has not yet published this year’s programme. Last year it did so on 28 October, eleven days before the day, and the details below are from that 2025 announcement unless marked otherwise.

What happens at the town centre service

In 2025 the Mayor of Stockport led the borough at the Civic Act of Remembrance outside the War Memorial Art Gallery. The council’s 2025 announcement set out the order:

  • At precisely 11am, a two-minute silence, beginning with the Last Post and ending with the Reveille.
  • Prayers, hymns and reflections, then wreaths laid on the steps of the War Memorial.
  • The Art Gallery opened from 9.30am on Remembrance Sunday for people to pay their respects.

The council also warned that “there may be some temporary road closures in place for a short period of time whilst services and events are taking place”. It did not publish which roads. Our roadworks and travel page will carry them if it does this year.

Armistice Day, Wednesday 11 November

The council’s practice is a public two-minute silence at 11am on Armistice Day itself, again on the steps of the War Memorial Art Gallery with the Mayor. In 2025 residents were welcome to attend, and the gallery opened from 10am to 12pm for people to pay their respects.

One thing worth knowing if you are in the town centre that morning: maroon rockets are launched from the civic complex to mark the start and end of the silence. The council says the sound “should be heard from up to 2 miles away, and residents and shoppers should not be alarmed” (Stockport Council).

Services across the borough

Remembrance is not only a town centre event. The council publishes a borough-wide list of services as an event listing each year, and removes it afterwards: the 2025 listing now returns a “page not found”. As indexed before it came down, it included:

  • Bramhall: a procession from Holland Road at 10.40am to Bramhall War Memorial, a service at 11am, then a procession to St Michael and All Angels Parish Church.
  • Bredbury: a service at 3pm at the War Memorial on George Lane.

Other districts, including Cheadle, Marple, Hazel Grove, Heald Green, Reddish and Romiley, hold their own services, each at its own time. We have not reproduced last year’s times for those because we could not read them from the council’s own page, and they do move. We will add the full 2026 list when the council publishes it.

Getting there and parking

The War Memorial Art Gallery is on Wellington Road South, SK3 8AB. In 2025 the council named the nearest pay and display car parks as the Armoury Street car park (restricted access) and the Ritz Cinema car park. Our parking in Stockport page covers charges across the town centre.
