Blue bins go back to fortnightly from four-weekly before Christmas. Councillors debate it on 1 September, and every printed calendar runs out next week.

Stockport’s blue bins are going back to a fortnightly collection. The council announced the reversal on 25 August, fifteen months after moving paper and card recycling to a four-weekly round. The new arrangement will be in place “ahead of Christmas 2026” (Stockport Council).

It has not happened yet. Residents are told to keep following their current collection days until further notice. On Tuesday evening a councillor will push the issue at scrutiny anyway. There is also a practical problem the announcement did not mention. Every printed bin calendar in the borough runs out in the first full week of September.

The gap between blue bin collections doubled, and is about to halve

Blue and brown bins moved to a four-week cycle in May 2025. Only the blue bin is going back.

The council’s own round calendars show the change plainly. Take the Monday round covering Bredbury. Blue and brown bins were collected on 27 July and again on 24 August 2026, four weeks apart. Before the May 2025 change the same round had them on 7 and 21 April, and 5 and 19 May, a fortnight apart. Every calendar carries a banner across the top: “From 26th May 2025 there are changes to round collections and frequencies.”

The council’s live collection lookup says the same thing. At an address on Ruskin Grove in Bredbury, the black and green bins were due today, Monday 31 August, a bank holiday. The next blue bin is Monday 21 September (Stockport Council).

Only the blue bin is named in the announcement. Brown bins, for plastic, glass, tins and cans, share the same four-weekly slot, and nothing published so far says they move.

Every printed calendar runs out next week

This is the part residents will notice first. We downloaded the published round calendars for 14 rounds covering all five collection days. Every one of them stops in the same week:

  • Monday rounds end on 7 September
  • Tuesday rounds end on 8 September
  • Wednesday rounds end on 9 September
  • Thursday rounds end on 10 September
  • Friday rounds end on 11 September

The council says updated calendars will be published on its website “next month” and delivered to households “from the end of September”. Cllr Jake Austin, the Cabinet Member for Housing and Environment, said the council was announcing the change now “because we want to give residents plenty of notice ahead of the change”.

That leaves a stretch of roughly two to three weeks where the paper calendar on the kitchen wall has nothing left on it. The online lookup does carry dates beyond that point, which is how we know about 21 September, so the information exists. It just is not on the fridge.

Why it changed, and the July that forced it

The council frames the reversal around the size of the bin rather than the length of the wait. Lids have to be fully closed for crew safety, and it accepts this “has made it harder for some households to fit all of their recycling into their blue bin”. Christmas makes that worse, when volumes of cardboard and paper rise.

The closed lid rule is the same one behind a run of missed collections in July. On 30 July the council apologised for a reminder issued to crews about applying the policy that “wasn’t communicated to residents in advance”. It arranged catch-up collections:

  • bins missed between 21 and 24 July, to be presented by 6am on Saturday 1 August, with a return visit on Sunday 2 August
  • bins missed on 27, 28 or 29 July, to be presented from 6am on Saturday 8 August, with a return visit on Sunday 9 August

Both offers came with the same condition: the lid had to be fully closed (Stockport Council).

Cllr Mark Roberts, the Leader of the council, said Stockport is “one of the top 10 performing recycling councils in England and the highest-performing in the North West”. Returning to fortnightly collections would help maintain that, he said. He added that the council had “listened carefully to the feedback we’ve received in recent weeks”.

Councillors get it on the agenda tomorrow

Blue bin collection has been added as item 12, an item of urgent business, to the Corporate, Resource Management and Governance Scrutiny Committee. It meets at 6pm on Tuesday 1 September in Committee Room 2 at the Town Hall, and the meeting is webcast.

The supplement is one page long. It says only that the item “has been added at the request of Councillor David Meller”, and it was circulated on Thursday 27 August, two days after the announcement (Stockport Council). No report, no options paper and no costings are attached, so whatever is said on the night will be said without a document behind it.

The same agenda carries the Quarter 1 budget monitoring update and a report on whether the council should introduce a council tax discount for residents living with a terminal illness.

What it means for you

  • Nothing changes yet. Keep to your current collection day until the council tells you otherwise.
  • Your blue bin is still four-weekly until the new arrangement starts. Check the date on the council’s lookup rather than your paper calendar after next week.
  • The paper calendar expires on 7 to 11 September depending on your round. New ones are due to be delivered from the end of September.
  • If your bin will not shut, it will not be emptied. Blue bins can be swapped for a larger 240 litre size free of charge.
  • Brown bins have not been mentioned. They share the four-weekly slot with blue, and no change to them has been announced.
