Stockport town centre holds no single lights switch-on. Spectacular Sunday opens the season and the Underbanks has its own. Neither is dated for 2026 yet.
If you are searching for a Stockport Christmas lights switch-on, the honest answer is that the town centre does not hold one. There is no countdown, no celebrity flicking a switch, no single evening when the lights come on in front of a crowd in Merseyway. Stockport does Christmas differently, and it does it across two separate events.
Spectacular Sunday is the official start
The event the council itself calls the start of the festive season is Spectacular Sunday, a free afternoon of street theatre across the town centre. In 2025 it ran on Sunday 16 November, 12pm to 5pm, in its third year, with more than 200 performers and 50 free shows spread across Merseyway Shopping Centre, Suffragette Square, the Underbanks, Market Place, Redrock and Warren Street.
It is organised by Stockport Council, Totally Stockport, Merseyway Shopping Centre and Stockport Market, with production by Global Grooves, and it is part-funded by the UK Government. The 2025 line-up ran to a giant carnival bee, stilt-walking Christmas Belles, comedy chefs, bouncing snowmen, cocky robins and roaming bands.
Mark Ross, Totally Stockport’s chief executive, put the thinking plainly in the council’s announcement: “Stockport likes to do Christmas in its own way and our Spectacular Sunday event is about filling the town with energy, music and performance.”
Nothing is dated for 2026. A fourth Spectacular Sunday has not been announced.
The Underbanks does have a switch-on
The one genuine lights switch-on in Stockport belongs to the Underbanks, and it covers the independent quarter rather than the whole town centre. It is delivered by Totally Stockport with the Stockport Independent Traders’ Association.
- 2025: Saturday 29 November, from 6pm, with Stockport Silver Band playing and Underbanks businesses open for late-night shopping
- 2023: Saturday 18 November, 6pm to 10pm, with a Christmas tree lights switch-on and live music from the same band
Again, no 2026 date has been published.
The lights are definitely going up
This is the part worth knowing if you are wondering whether Christmas is being scaled back. It is not. Stockport Council put its Stockport Christmas Lights Programme out to tender on 21 May 2026, covering the hire, delivery, collection, storage and refurbishment of festive lights plus the manufacture and supply of pea lights for Christmas trees.
| Detail | Published figure |
|---|---|
| Value | £105,000 net, £126,000 including VAT |
| Contract period | 1 November 2026 to 31 January 2027 |

| Tender deadline | Noon, 12 June 2026 |
| Covers | Town centre, district centres, local centres, key gateway sites |
| Excludes | Merseyway Shopping Centre and Stockport Exchange |
Merseyway and Stockport Exchange are carved out because they light their own estates. No award notice had been published as at 4 September, so the contractor is not yet public, but the contract start date of 1 November tells you when the installation begins.
Why nothing is announced yet, and when it will be
Stockport announces its festive programme very late, and the record is consistent. The council’s Spectacular Sunday press release went out on 13 November 2025 for an event three days later. The Underbanks switch-on times were reported on 11 November 2025 for an event on the 29th.
So mid-November is the realistic window. Three checks we have already run come back empty:
- Stockport Council’s events calendar for 1 November to 31 December 2026 lists concerts, party nights, the Plaza pantomime and Foodie Friday, but no switch-on and no Spectacular Sunday
- One Stockport carries 593 listings between 1 October 2026 and 10 January 2027, none of them festive beyond the monthly Makers Market
- Merseyway’s own events page lists only its Moon Festival on 12 and 13 September
The council’s 2025 festive landing pages have since been deleted rather than updated, so anything still ranking for “Christmas in Stockport town centre 2025” now returns a 404.
This page will be updated as each date is confirmed. In the meantime, our Stockport parking page covers the car park charges that changed this year, and the roadworks and travel page tracks closures in the town centre.
