Stockport's lights go on at 4.45pm on Sunday 15 November, ending a free Spectacular Sunday of 200 performers and a parade of over 100 drummers.

Stockport town centre’s official Christmas lights switch-on is at 4.45pm on Sunday 15 November 2026. It is the finale of Spectacular Sunday, a free afternoon of street performance from 12pm to 5pm, and it comes straight after a parade of more than 100 drummers.

Updated 19 October: the council and Totally Stockport have now announced the 2026 date and the switch-on. Last year’s event had no lights switch-on, so this page previously said the town centre did not hold one. Romiley’s traders have also listed their switch-on day for Saturday 21 November.

Spectacular Sunday 2026: what is confirmed

The council announced the fourth Spectacular Sunday on 16 October (Stockport Council). The organisers’ own listing carries the same details (Totally Stockport).

The named acts so far:

  • a giant Snow Lion, with dancing elves and stiltwalkers
  • Over The Moon, a circus adventure into space
  • Hydropunk, a hands-on show of water-powered pipes, pumps and sprays
  • The Miniscule of Sound, billed as the world’s smallest nightclub
  • Brazilian-inspired drumming from Juba do Leão and Katumba

Festive bands and local community groups will also perform. The full programme, with times and stages, has not been published yet.

The event is organised by Stockport Council, Totally Stockport, Merseyway Shopping Centre and Stockport Market, with Redrock named as a partner by Totally Stockport. Global Grooves produces it, and it is part-funded by the UK Government.

Why the switch-on is new

Spectacular Sunday has opened Stockport’s festive season since 2023. Last year it had no lights switch-on: the 2025 event ran on Sunday 16 November, and its published programme finished with a giant bee puppet parade from 4.30pm to 5pm (Totally Stockport). Totally Stockport now calls the 4.45pm moment “the official Christmas lights switch-on”.

The Underbanks has its own switch-on

The Underbanks has held a separate lights switch-on for the independent quarter, run by Totally Stockport with the Stockport Independent Traders’ Association.

  • 2025: Saturday 29 November, from 6pm, with Stockport Silver Band playing and Underbanks businesses open for late-night shopping
  • 2023: Saturday 18 November, 6pm to 10pm, with a Christmas tree lights switch-on and live music from the same band

No 2026 date has been published for it yet.

Romiley switches on its lights on 21 November

Romiley’s traders hold their own switch-on, and theirs is dated. Romiley Traders Association has listed it for Saturday 21 November 2026, 11am to 6pm, at Romiley Forum on The Precinct (SK6 4EA), and it is free (Stockport Council events calendar).

  • market stalls selling cakes, gifts, candles, jewellery, cheese, meats and bread
  • entertainment through the day from local schools, choirs, brass bands, NK Theatre and Pantonic Steel band
  • a grotto with Father Christmas

The listing does not give the time of the switch-on itself.

No other district centre had listed a 2026 switch-on in the council’s events calendar when we checked on 19 October.

The lights are definitely going up

This is the part worth knowing if you are wondering whether Christmas is being scaled back. It is not. Stockport Council put its Stockport Christmas Lights Programme out to tender on 21 May 2026, covering the hire, delivery, collection, storage and refurbishment of festive lights plus the manufacture and supply of pea lights for Christmas trees.

Merseyway and Stockport Exchange are carved out because they light their own estates. No award notice had been published as at 4 September, so the contractor is not yet public, but the contract start date of 1 November tells you when the installation begins.

What is still to come

Stockport announces most of its festive programme late. The 2025 Spectacular Sunday release went out on 13 November 2025, three days before the event, and the Underbanks switch-on times were reported on 11 November 2025. The 2026 announcement came a month earlier, but the full programme is still to follow, and the Underbanks date has not been set.
