Richard Dawson and his wife Pam asked guests at his 80th birthday party for donations and raised £778 for cancer care at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport.
A Stockport man who was not keen on a party for his 80th birthday ended up using it to raise £778 for patients having cancer treatment at Stepping Hill Hospital.
Richard Dawson and his wife Pam held the party at home with family, friends and loved ones, and asked guests for donations to Stockport NHS Charity, the official charity of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. The trust announced the total on 7 November.
According to the trust, Mr Dawson was not keen on the idea of a party at first, but warmed to it and saw a chance to turn his own celebration into something for other people. For the couple, the trust said, it was a way to bring people together while supporting local people receiving care.

Where the money goes
The £778 will go towards improving the surroundings and care for patients having cancer treatment at Stepping Hill, the trust said.
Kate Leadbeater, charity manager at Stockport NHS Charity, said: “A heartfelt thank you to Richard and Pam, and to everyone who donated, for supporting local people receiving cancer care at Stepping Hill Hospital. Choosing to help others while celebrating such a special birthday is a wonderful act of caring and kindness.”
She added: “Richard and Pam’s caring is a heartfelt reminder that a personal milestone can also be an opportunity to help others, turning a special celebration into an act of kindness. We are so grateful.”
The trust’s own announcement is on the Stockport NHS Foundation Trust website. Cancer care at the hospital site also gained a Macmillan support centre in October.
