266 companies took a Stockport borough address in August, 24 fewer than a year ago. Retail leads the list, and two Bramhall postcodes hold 1,766 active firms.

Two hundred and sixty six companies were incorporated with a Stockport borough address in August 2026, according to the register at Companies House. The same month in 2025 produced 290.

That is a fall of 24, or about 8 per cent. It is worth reading carefully rather than as a verdict on the local economy, for reasons set out in the method note at the foot of this piece.

What the new companies say they do

Every company gives Companies House at least one standard industrial classification code when it registers. Firms can give up to four, so the totals below overlap and do not add to 266.

  • Retail, including online selling: 45

  • Construction and the building trades: 25
  • Food and drink: 24
  • IT and software: 23
  • Health, care and social work: 14
  • Transport and storage: 11
  • Finance and holding companies: 9

Companies can register up to four codes, so these categories overlap.

The single most common code was 68209, other letting and operating of own or leased real estate, used 29 times. Second was 47910, retail sale via mail order houses or via the internet, used 25 times. Both are broad codes that cover a landlord with one flat as readily as a portfolio.

Where they are, and why the ward table misleads

Bramhall South and Woodford tops the ward table with 38 of the 266. Then come Brinnington and Stockport Central with 30, Heald Green with 24, Cheadle West and Gatley with 17, and Manor and Reddish South with 15 each.

Bramhall does not lead because 38 businesses opened there in August. It leads because of one building. Fifteen of the 38 gave the same registered office: Bramhall House, 14 Ack Lane East. A search of the register for that postcode, SK7 2BY, returns 832 active companies.

It is not the only one. Four more addresses took four or more of August’s registrations each:

  • Carpenter Court, 1 Maple Road (SK7 2DH): 5 registrations in August, and 934 active companies at that postcode.
  • Whitworth House, 28 Charles Street (SK1 3JR): 8 in August, 212 active at the postcode. All eight are unit numbers inside Unit 20, between C87 and C98. The building’s name is spelled three different ways across the eight entries.
  • Mynshull House (SK1 1YJ): 5 in August, 516 active at the postcode.
  • Eden Point, Three Acres Lane, Cheadle (SK8 6RL): 5 in August, 278 active at the postcode. These entries name the accountants Cutts and Co in the address itself.

Between them, the two Bramhall postcodes hold 1,766 active companies.

None of that is irregular. A registered office is only the address where official post is served. Accountants and serviced office operators sell the service, and it is the ordinary way a director working from home keeps a home address off a public database. The point for anyone reading a ward count is simply that a registered office is not a trading address, and a busy ward on this measure is not necessarily a busy high street.

The ones that look like shops

Stripping out the office addresses, August’s register does contain firms at recognisable trading addresses across the borough. Among them:

  • Heaton Moor Greengrocers Ltd, 145 Heaton Moor Road, registered 3 August under retail sale of fruit and vegetables in specialised stores.
  • Church Lane Garage Limited, Church Lane in the Bramhall South and Woodford ward, registered 13 August under retail sale of automotive fuel.
  • Lupton Brothers Garden Centre and Cafe Limited, Montagu Street in Marple North ward, registered 26 August under retail sale of flowers and plants, and unlicensed restaurants and cafes.
  • Hazel Grove Mini Market SK7 Ltd, registered 12 August at an address in Hazel Grove, under retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, drink or tobacco predominating.
  • Clover Bistro Limited, School Lane in the Reddish South ward, registered 21 August under licensed restaurants.

Food and drink was the fifth largest category, and take-away food shops and mobile food stands alone accounted for 11 of the 266.

Be careful what you read into any of this. Registering a company is a form and a fee. It is not proof that a business has opened, taken a lease or hired anyone, and plenty of registrations never trade at all.

What it means for you

  • If you are checking out a firm before you hire it, the register is free and public. A company number in a quote lets you see the incorporation date, the registered office and whether the accounts are overdue.
  • A brand new company is not a warning sign, but it does mean there is no filing history to look at. Ask for references and use a payment method with some protection.
  • An office address in a quote is worth a second look. If a builder’s registered office is a suite number shared with hundreds of other companies, that is normal practice, not a red flag, but it is not where they work either.

How we counted

We used the Companies House advanced search, filtered to incorporations dated 1 to 31 August 2026, running one query for each of the borough’s eight outward postcodes from SK1 to SK8. That returned 267 unique records. Every full postcode was then checked against the Office for National Statistics postcode directory to confirm the local authority. One was in Tameside and was dropped, leaving 266 in Stockport. Of those, 261 are private limited companies, four are companies limited by guarantee and one is a limited liability partnership.

The 2025 comparison was built the same way and gave 290.

Two limits are worth stating. First, the search matches the address on the register today, so a company that has since moved its office in or out of the borough sits on the wrong side of the comparison. Second, SK6, SK7 and SK8 each extend beyond the borough boundary, which is why every postcode was checked individually rather than assumed.
